Who protects those in need?
For thousands of years, people have called upon patron saints in times of hardship or sought protection for their professions and daily activities. There are patron saints for occupations that no longer exist. At the same time, entirely new professions and social groups have emerged—many of them without any patron saint or protector of their own.
I am fascinated by humanity’s enduring attraction to divine figures and mythical heroes who are meant to guide, support, and protect us. With my series “Guardians”, I have created five contemporary patron saints. Just like their historical counterparts, their connection to a specific profession or social group is revealed through subtle visual clues.
Remote Worker
The guardian of remote workers may not be immediately recognizable through the laptop and coffee mug alone. However, the exercise ball used as a chair and the top half of her business outfit paired with slippers make her identity unmistakable.
Single Parent
I deliberately chose a father as the guardian of single parents in order to challenge stereotypes. At the same time, I am fully aware that the majority of care work is still carried out by women. This guardian carries shopping bags while his two children lean against him. The smartwatch and tablet reveal him as a distinctly modern patron saint.
Commuter
The guardian of commuters is identified by a number of clues: business attire, headphones, a shoulder bag, a takeaway coffee, and a smartphone that allows her to join online meetings while still standing on the platform. And, of course, there is the folding bicycle waiting to cover the final mile after leaving the train.
Delivery Driver
Without them, modern life would probably grind to a halt: delivery drivers. Constantly under time pressure and facing demanding physical work, they make our lives easier through their daily deliveries, often while still managing a friendly smile. This guardian angel is dedicated to them.
Clubgoer
This angel carries several clues to her identity: bare feet, shoes held casually in one hand, a jacket draped over the shoulder, and sunglasses. While Berlin is famous for its legendary nightlife, club culture faces increasing pressure, and partygoers must remain aware of risks such as harassment and spiked drinks. This guardian angel stands beside everyone who dances until sunrise—and those who work through the night to make these experiences possible.
